Jake’s (Puro Pedo Magazine editor-in-chief) reactions to the police brutality at yesterday’s May Day immigrant’s rights march and rally:

Esbeydy, Ralph, Victor and I from Puro Pedo Magazine attended the Los Angeles Rally’s on May 1st in honor of May Day. We were very excited since we just released our 5th issue of Puro Pedo Magazine and were eager to pass them out to a lot of people who probably wouldn’t have access to the magazine other wise.

The First rally to the Courthouse was short and sweet. Never mind what people are saying about the numbers. It was packed and gente despite attempts to scare them with threats of deportation still showed up in force!

The second March to MacArthur Park’s seemed weird from the start. First off the police would not let anyone on the streets and made us march on narrow sidewalks. The Cops seemed ruder than usual. Perhaps this corresponds to reports that cops were agitating people. We had a good time at MacArthur Park. Saw old and new friends and hung out and caught up with people. On our way out people told us that the cops were driving their motorcycles through the crowds and because of this there were some small altercations between cops and bystanders. When we left at around 6pm cops were all in riot gear outside the park. The people inside the park were in good spirits and peaceful so I didn’t think anything would happen.

After we all got home and soaked in hot baths (not together), we started getting the reports that Cops had begun shooting people with rubber bullets and kicking everyone out of the park.

This is ridiculous! I know we are a Satire magazine but we are pissed! This was basically a festival full of families. Our community has been peaceful in getting our message out. Cops would not have behaved so inappropriately if we were not brown folks. The community will no longer stand for this and we are already forming committees to address the police violence. We need to check them as a community and not tolerate this abuse of power.

As for Puro Pedo Magazine part…trust us the chota will be clowned in our next issue!!!!

Puro Pedo Magazine’s May issue is out now, but you’ll have to be a little patient for the online version (the pages are numbered for the printers, but not for online readers). For this month we’re featuring two covers. The black-and-white ‘zine issue is a tribute to old school Xicano alternative magazines like Pocho, Chispas, Q-Vo, La Gente de Aztlan and La Neta. These magazines inspired our look and our writing.

No Lloran, mi gente. We will be back to our full color glossy look next month.
